What is with all of this "genie, you're free" crap? He chose to kill himself. He chose to get the hell out of this world rather than stay and live in it. He was so depressed and sad that he chose to shut his own eyes forever. Imagine if your best friend killed themselves. Would you say, "Sarah, you're free!" or would you ball your eyes out and wish to God that they hadn't done it? Anyone thinking about killing themselves right now sees stuff like this and could think "I want to be free too".  It's awful.

Robin Williams was one of my favorite actors growing up, and I don't think acting like his death was some get out of jail free card is the right way to honor him.

You're putting yourself in the shoes of a friend of him, when he was just an actor to us that we saw on TV. If he was my friend IRL, of course I wouldn't say Genie you're free, because I would miss the shit out of him and wouldn't even want him to departure from this world.
Not knowing him IRL makes it totally different, we don't know what he's been through, put yourself in his shoes now, and maybe that suicide was his only option and the only thing left in the world that could give him happiness.

Saying Genie you're free, meaning he's finally free of this place where he doesn't want to live anymore.

Guess who else wasn't happy with their life? Genie, because he felt 'trapped' in that lamp.
Guess who else felt trapped? Robin Williams, in his this life.
"Genie, you're free" is in reference to that, hope I could clarify any confusion you had
