My Speech is about the U.S Federal Budget and why the government should ease the burden on TaxPayers and should have a smaller government. Please tell me your thoughts and if anything needs to be changed. Thanks!
Speech:
“This year I was an employee of Salpointe High School and I got paid $500 to be a debate coach. And when financial officer was telling me to fill out the tax form, she told me to fill out all the minimum taxes because they’ll take more away from you if you don’t. And I said “Well that’s stupid. I’m making $500, they’re not going to take any taxes away from me. That’s ridiculous.” Well it turns out they took $40 of taxes, and I thought to myself “what’s going on?”… they took out Social Security and Medicare, and then state and local taxes. I was shocked. I mean, I was shocked that they took money out of my $500 paycheck, I was not shocked that there are Social Security, Medicare, and state and local taxes. -Will”. Hello my name is Rock, and I’m Brad. Today we are here to talk about the United States budget policy, and the government should ease the burden on taxpayers and also have a smaller government. The Government Policy set for 2014 according to The White House and The President is, they want to raise the minimum wage to 9 dollars. The President wants to achieve another 1.8 Trillion Dollars in deficit reduction in a balanced way when combined with the current deficit reduction. The government says this will allow the white house to exceed the goal of 4 Trillion Dollars in deficit reduction, while it will grow the economy and straighten the middle class.
Why should the taxes be lower and we need a smaller government? According to FolletSoftWare.Com in 2010, the United States government spent a total of 2.2 Trillion Dollars on mandatory spending, 1.4 Trillion Dollars on Discretionary Spending, and 1.4 Trillion Dollars in Deficit in total, it adds up to around 5 Billion Dollars. Where does a lot of these money go into within the 3 sections? In the Mandatory Spending Section where it takes up Two-Thirds of the government’s spending, most of the money goes towards Social Security in which the government spent a total of 695 Billion Dollars on. In the Discretionary Section, most of the money goes towards the Military. The Government spends 663 Billion Dollars on the military alone. The Deficit (Government’s spending that exceeds it’s income in a period of time) itself has 1.4 Trillion Dollars just in Deficit. If taxes were lowered then maybe, there would not be this much debt and spending and there would be less. As they increase the debt, they will also increase the taxes. They should only truly tax when the economy is at need, not just when they need more money to spend.
According to FindTheData.Org, Over the past 20 years, federal spending grew 63 percent faster than inflation. Mandatory spending doubled after adjusting for inflation and Discretionary spending grew by 48 percent. In 2009, the government had a deficit of -1.5 Trillion Dollars and then in 2010, there deficit lowered by 200 billion dollars making the government’s deficit -1.3 Trillion Dollars. The budget surplus for the U.S Government in 2009 was 136 Billion Dollars, then in 2010 there surplus was lowered by 59 Billion Dollars making there surplus 77 Billion Dollars. The on budget outlays the government had in 2009 was 3 Trillion Dollars, then in 2010 it lowered by only 100 billion dollars making it 2.9 Trillion Dollars. From 2009 to 2010, the spending was lowered by atleast 500 Billion Dollars total, but the government is still greatly in debt.
“One thing is clear, though: the level of debt relative to income cannot rise without limit. This insight is important, given that there is strong reason to believe that the extraordinary rise in the debt-to-GDP ratio is a result of the government-controlled, fiat-money system in which the money supply is increased through bank lending.” -Thorsen Polleit. According to the New York Post, in 2011, the government spent the government spent a total of 3.6 Trillion Dollars. They spent 400 Million dollars every hour and everyday. 3.6 Trillion Dollars is about 1.4 Trillion Dollars lowered from the 2010 federal budget spending but they are still in the trillions and that is still a lot. Did you know, in the U.S Navy, they spend 11 billion dollars on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. That is a lot of money spent on one thing that is probably not needed in the Navy. Where do they get the money? They get the money to get those things by your taxes. According to Dave Lindorff from CommonDream.Org, around 53% of your taxes go towards the Military. “The 2011 military budget, by the way, is the largest in history, not just in actual dollars, but in inflation adjusted dollars, exceeding even the spending in World War II, when the nation was on an all-out military footing.” -Dave Lindorff. Tax cuts will actually help close the budget gap by spurring the economy and bringing in more tax revenue.
Therefore, The government should ease the burden on Taxpayers and have a smaller government. The government should only tax when only the economy needs a boost. Yes, the federal budget spending has lowered in the past few years, but as they also increased the prices for Medicare, Mandatory Spending, and Discretionary Spending. If taxes are lowered, maybe the government budget spending would not be as high as it is. The people should decide where there money should go as they were the ones that worked hard for their hard earned cash. Only a little bit of taxes should be paid, not as much as it is now. So ask yourself, is this really necessary? Is this where you want your money to go?
