    Think of it this way, the height of the water halves, along with the mass of the water.
    So if it was initially 10m, and 10 KG, it is now 5 KG and 5M.
    G is a constant so it doesn't change.

    Since two of the variables are getting halved (x1/2)
    1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4
    Answer = Mgh / 4

    I think.

    nope, it there are 2 containers. If initial is 10x10xg = 100g

    final will be 2 x (5x5xg) = 50g

    so lost is mgh/2

    Last part can't be seen on the right, loss is mgh/2 - mgh/4 = mgh/4

    LOL

    don't use formulas without knowing what they mean.

    When we use mgh normally, it means the body is at a height of h. Example a ball on top of  100m building.

    If you take the full h, you're indicating all the mass of water acts at point h. Which is not true. That's why use the centre, h/2 cause that's where the mass of water acts.

    It's an AS past year paper. The answer isn't wrong, I just had to work on it and finally figured it out.

    Oh btw,

    Dude i never learned the rule where you use h/2 cuz it's in the center
    We never have dealt with mgh in water
    I thought this was olevels
