Smart enough? [Riddle] Empty Smart enough? [Riddle]

    Post by Slash 2013-01-23, 18:53

Three guys go to a hotel.

They want to rent one room for themselves.

The price of a room is $30.

They each pay $10 to the manager to rent out a room.

The next day, the manager realizes that the room was only $25 in summers.

So the manager gives $5 to his bellboy (assistant or whatever) and tells him to go return the $5 to the guys.

So the bellboy doesn't know how he's gonna equally divide $5.

So he keeps $2 and gives them $1 each.

At this point of the riddle we can say that each guy paid $9. Since they initially paid $10 but now got $1 back.

    That's 3 guys that paid $9 (9x3 = $27) And the bellboy has $2, 27+2 = 29.

Where the fuck is the 30th dollar?

    9*3 =27
27-2 = $25 which is what the room cost.
Thre is no logic to adding the $2 to the $27

This actually isn’t as much a math problem, as a logic and semantics problem. It took me a few minutes to spot the logical fallacy in this problem. I knew it was there, but it was difficult to spot nonetheless.

This is a semantic fallacy. The premise is false, which you can see when you work the equation backwards. The men do pay a total of $9.00 each (total of $27.00) for the room, but only after you add in the amount they tipped the bellboy. They paid $25 dollars for the room and they gave the bellboy $2 as a tip. ($25 + 2 = $27.00). At this point the only thing to add back in to get to the original $30.00 is the $3 the men received as a refund. ($27 + $3 = $30)

    Or to simply it further:
There is a misdirect in the problem when it says that when you do the math each man paid $9 each for the room, plus $2 tip. They don't. They pay a combined price of $25.00 plus the $2 tip. The problem sets up a set of facts:
$30.00 was originally given to the hotel owner
Correct price of the room = $25
Each man receives $1 dollar refund = $3
The Bellboy receives a $2 tip
    $25 for room + $2 tip for the Bellboy = $27
$30 - $27 = $3 which is how much the men receive back as a refund.

Pay the fucking gp up pl0x.

10(from each guy)x3(the number of guys)=30 ($30 with the manager)
30(with the manager)-5(he gives to the bellboy) = 25 ($5 with the bellboy, $25 with the manager)
5(with the bellboy)-2(he keep for himself) = 3 ($2 with the bellboy, $25 with the manager, $3 with the three guys)

    2+25+3=30?

I don't know where you could possibly go wrong...

    Men +$30, Manager $0, Bellboy $0.
    Men -$30, Manager $30, Bellboy $0.
    Men -$30, Manager $25, Bellboy $5.
    Men -$27, Manager $25, Bellboy $2.

I honestly didn't find the fallacy, but it looks like the order of operations just got switched up.

The person is just presenting facts that are true by themselves, but are bullshit when combined together.

    30-5=25
    30-1-1-1-2=25

Nvm, just found the fallacy. You aren't supposed to add back to 30 because the men got ripped off $2 by the scumbag bellboy. 27-2=25

No missing money, just some troll who wasted 10 minutes of my life.

    His logic: 30-3+2=29 <-- NO!

Also... why is the hotel room $30?

    I'd never stay there.

I know this one but with an example of buying a video game.
The answer is that the $1 never existed, this is similar to what happens on bank accounts and basically the bank profits by doing this method; no one will ever notice $1 missing on their account and imagine, they do it on millions of accounts!

    It's all there....
    10+10+10= 30
    30-5=25
    $5 being distributed.
1+1+1=3, making it $3 returned out of 5, still making the total of $28
+2$ the asshole faggot kept, $30 total
