Are we living in a simulation? Empty Are we living in a simulation?

    Post by Allen1 2018-03-30, 23:38

I've heard a lot of the Neil de Grasse Tyson and Elon Musk's videos on this matter but I'm still curious on your guys' views.

Are we living in a simulation?

I'm almost certain we are based on some spiritual experiences I've had in the past.

Additionally, structural hierarchies in the biological world, mathematical motifs that are repetitive (Fibonacci's sequence for example) and the fact that we, as humans, are in the process of creating our own artificial design and virtual reality is evidence that we might be living in one.

    Thoughts?

It's more likely than God(s) existing, tbf.

Don't see why that would point towards us living in a simulation. Maths is the language of the universe. Fibonacci, Mandelbrot, etc. cropping up everywhere is a given.

If we had unpredictable, non-repetitive motifs that constituted our multi-verse then the simulation theory could be discounted.

But, theoretically, if you were some higher intelligence, you could "program" the laws of the universe just as you could program Java, Python, HTML... whatever. A little bit of a simplification but it's possible.

Just the fact that we can *somewhat* predict repetitive global phenomena based on atmospheric conditions that affect the biological processes of billions of organisms (Ice ages, Volcanoes) also points to this being true.

So, we're essentially arguing determinism, the existence of true randomness, and whether this has an effect on the world anyway. A deterministic world doesn't necessarily point to it being a simulation. That requires more evidence, in my opinion.

The simulation would be a self-correcting "code" or system because it wouldn't make sense to have an infinite amount of functions.. the errors in the simulation would be obvious to on-goers when shortcomings in the code are present (which would be likely)  . Likewise, it wouldn't be feasible to make Feynman diagrams of every subatomic particle interaction in the universe.

However, if you could envision the simulation as some sort of quantum computer, where multiple subatomic particles could be the same quantum bit, it would be possible for the universe to self-correct or even "calculate" itself, making its constituents oblivious to its conception.

None of that is evidence for our world being a simulation, just how it could be one. We could be living in a simulation - in the same way God could exist.

    Yeah, you're right.

If life were a game (a simulation), it wouldn't make sense from the player's point of view to know he was playing a game.

I only made this thread because it's something I think of occasionally since I did ayahuasca with a friend in Peru!
